What I prefer to do is to loop that section at full speed. I know it can be difficult to learn EVERYTHING at full speed, but the goal is to use a slowed down version only as a last resort, or to really magnify a very small section. This way I can repeat each phrase ad nauseum without having to keep touching the phone. (Note: I don’t use the “slow down” feature.) The Amazing Slow Downer app is great for creating and and storing loops to learn songs and solos faster. I’m not slowing anything down, it just allows me to create lots of mini loops for each section of the song. I’m using an iPhone app called the amazing slow downer.

Some just use play/pause/rewind on a Dropbox file. Another uses a looping program on his laptop. One guy will sit and listen to each song repeatedly in headphones until he feels he’s got the entire roadmap in his mind. Everyone learns the music by ear.Įach person has their unique way of doing it. The band wakes up each morning-after being in the studio until 2 am-to an email with a couple new songs to learn by lunch time. Transcribing: it’s not just for learning solos It’s one reason we do a monthly group transcription challenge. I’m sure any of the 1,000+ people who’ve been part of my online saxophone studio over the past 5 years would tell you I’m a staunch advocate of learning to transcribe. It’s about learning music by ear, from recordings, one phrase at a time. To me, it has nothing to do with notation. The word transcribing means different things to different people. So far we’ve learned and tracked 9 songs in 3 days-without a single note written down. The result is a studio full of people caring about the details, shape, and arc of each song. Each plays their tail off as a soloist, but also is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. Let me tell you how ridiculously awesome it is to have this remarkable group of musicians interpret your music.ġ bassist, 2 guitars, 3 drummers, 3 percussionists, 4 horns, and 4 keyboardists. Yesterday we tracked an original of song of mine. SIDENOTE: Recently I mentioned my “painter’s tape” preparation method for memorizing 24 Snarky Puppy songs in a week before a tour.

We’re aiming to record roughly 20 new songs this week. I’m writing this from a beautiful recording studio outside El Paso, Texas where I’m spending a week recording Snarky Puppy’s next album. Each session also has audience participation built-in - there’s ample time included in each for audience questions and discussion.UPDATE: we won a Grammy Award for this album!

We’ll cover every aspect of company building: Fundraising, recruiting, sales, legal, PR, marketing and brand building. You’ll hear firsthand how some of the most successful founders and VCs build their businesses, raise money and manage their portfolios. It's also a Microsoft Garage project, meaning it's meant to be more experimental and could be shuttered at any time.Ĭurrently, the Group Transcribe app is available on iOS only.Įarly Stage is the premier "how-to" event for startup entrepreneurs and investors. Users can delete their previously shared recordings at any time, but otherwise they're retained for up to two years on encrypted servers, the company says.īecause there's not a way for a business, at an admin level, to configure or block the "contribution" setting for all users, people should carefully weigh the advantages and risks of such a service. And Microsoft says it "de-identifies" meeting recordings by removing long strings of numbers that could represent things like credit card numbers or phone numbers, for example. Reviewers will also only have access to randomized snippets of audio, not full recordings. The user data will then be accessed under NDA by both Microsoft employees and contractors from other companies who work for Microsoft, but won't include any of the speakers' account credentials. By reviewing the data, Microsoft aims to improve its speech recognition and speaker attribution capabilities over time, it says. This allows Microsoft to retain the audio and speech recognition-generated text transcriptions when all meeting participants agree to opt in for that session. While Microsoft doesn't save the meeting transcripts and recordings itself after the fact - they're saved on your device - the app does encourage participants to "contribute" their meetings' recordings to Microsoft so it can improve the service. To work, the audio and text input data collected is sent to Microsoft's online speech recognition and translation technologies - though with a randomly generated identifier, not your real name.
